Chickens + health + biomass energy

May 11, 2015

More than 50 billion chickens are raised worldwide every year - everyone's favourite protein food. Reared in chicken sheds/houses heated to a healthy broiler growth

temperature from around 32˚C, maintained 24 hrs of everyday, for 5 to 9 weeks.

Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), the most common & costly heating source on chicken farms

is causing bird welfare problems.

Direct LPG heaters are an inefficient & expensive source of heat, detrimental to poultry house environment - leading to increased humidity, CO2 and ammonia levels.

As a result, large amounts of ventilation are needed, leading to more heating expense to maintain optimum temperature.

The solution, introduced by progressive poultry farms worldwide, is to scrap direct LPG heating and install biomass boiler indirect water-air heat exchanges, powered by chicken shed litter (on site), wood waste chips/sawdust, fruit stones etc.

Efficient/cost effective indirect "dry heat" ensures optimum chicken welfare/performance & reduces input costs.
